the administration justifies the targeted killing of american citizens. the white house says president obama has directed the department of justice to brief members of the intelligence committees. the move comes after a bipartisan group of 11 senators led by democratic senator ron wyden of oregon called for more insight into the government's legal rationale for drone strikes against americans abroad. senator wyden said on twitter, "every american has the right to know when their government believes it's allowed to kill them." this followed the leaked white house memo obtained by nbc news this week detailing criteria required for such a strike. this is all unfolding before today's senate confirmation hearing for john brennan, nominated to be the next head of the cia. and andrea mitchell, i wonder if this could, in any way, get in the way of brennan again. >> well, this is so much in a state of flux right now. clearly, i mean, the president's called to senator wyden last night, so unusual to try to reassure him and try to ward off what could be a calamitous hearing today. the fact is that brennan

start with developing news in florida where the white house confirmed that president obama teed off with golfing great tiger woods today. woods lives about an hour and a half from where president obama is vacationing. they will be on the course for several more hours of course. joining us on the course is tim rosaforte. you are at the resort with the president. what more can you tell us? >> the floridaen golf and react club in palm city, florida is where they played their round of golf. the president is visiting here through some friends of his in houston. he was introduced to the golf course and as a result of that has decided to take a golf buddies trip more than anything else. he took lessons from butch harmon and his son, claude. they have been talking about playing their first round of golf. it was supposed to happen at the medalist about 30 minutes away. because of the weather and the security and everything they decided to do it here. and so at about 11:00 today they went off the first tee for their first round of golf. this is not the first time they have been together. they

president obama delivered his first state of the union address since his re-election. seated among the lerkz and house chambers were americans who symbolize the the priorities including young undocumented immigrants and victims of begun vie -- gun violence. he became emotional preventing further shootings just as he was in the aftermath of sandy hook. he sought his vision for a stronger middle class. he spoke of immigration reform, raising the minimum wage and energy independence. quoted john f. kennedy 1962 speech saying the substitution makes us not rivals for power but partners for progress. you agenda he made few concessions to republicans. it remans to be seen whether the president can break away from the bitter partisanship and dysfunction of his first term and whether he can strike the grand bargains the country needs. >> the greatest nation on worth cannot keep conducting its business by drifting from one manufactured crises to the next we can't do it. . look at the front page of "usa today." we'll start there. new polling is showing that president obama has a strong lead over congressional republicans on a host of big issues playing out right now in washington. that's according to the you in noons from "usa today" and pew research center. 45% of those polled say they support the president's approach to cutting the federal deficit. 38% support republicans, even a majority of republican voters endorse tax hikes as well as spending cuts. on gun reform, the president's approach polls six points higher than that of the gop. the poll also finds less than one-third of americans would blame the president if the sequester cuts kick in. nearly half of all americans would blame republicans. and on immigration, half of those polled say the president is taking the right approach. 33% endorse how republicans are tackling the issue. >> so james, if i'm still congressman in northwest florida and somebody hands me this and says, you're in trouble. i'm in trouble. i may get 79% instead of 80% of the vote, but that's what's running the republican brand
